What is Sinumerik One and the Digital Native CNC?

Technology has come a long way since 1949, when John T. Parsons, an early computing pioneer, developed it as part of an Air Force research project carried out at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

But while CNC’s are far more advanced (and pretty looking) than what we had 50 years ago, little has changed compared to the broader technology space.

Siemens with their Sinumerik One plan to change all that. The Internet of Things is here and Siemens want to be one of those ‘things’.

From the Siemens Sinumerik One website:

Sinumerik One, the digital native CNC, brings your ideas to life. Sinumerik One is the leading-edge CNC system for highly productive machine tools. For unprecedented new opportunities, ideas and business models. For faster innovation based on the seamless interaction of the virtual and real worlds. What’s more, SINUMERIK ONE represents much more than just a powerful hardware innovation.

At a basic level, Sinumerik One isn’t dissimilar to the Sinumerik 840 series, but with future-proof expandability as well as connection to its digital twin.

The Sinumerik One Digital Twin allows machine builders to programmers to machinists to all work on production in a digitized space. With tools for even much of the commisioning process to be achieved remotely, machines to be designed in a safe digital space as well as all the logisitical tools needed to closely keep track of materials, supplies, demands, efficency and carbon footprint.
