HURON GRAFFENSTADEN is a long-established and successful French company with a history dating back to 1873 when they first started manufacturing lathes and milling machines. The company was initially named after its founder, Pierre Philippe Huré, as Etablissements P. Huré. In 1967, the company’s name was changed to Huré S.A.

HURON’s early product range included a variety of conventional and unconventional designs of vertical and horizontal milling machines, backgeared and screwcutting lathes, horizontal borers, and gear-cutting machines. However, the hallmark of Huron’s success, the double-swivel milling head, was not introduced until the “Les Grandes Usines” industrial exhibition in 1894. This revolutionary milling head design set HURON apart in the industry.

Pierre’s son, Léon, joined the business in 1913, and by 1921, he had further developed the double-swivel head into the more versatile and recognizable ram-head design. Interestingly, the first models of this ram-head type were not manufactured by Huron themselves but by the well-known Swiss company Oerlikon in Zurich in 1924.

Throughout the 1940s and into the 1950s, HURON offered a wide range of milling machines, including the Type “K.” These machines incorporated swiveling heads and came in various versions, from general-purpose to specialized and copying machines. By the 1960s, HURON introduced a modified range of machines labeled with the prefixes “M” and “N.”

HURON machines have a reputation for adaptability and versatility, making them popular for a wide range of machining operations. Even today, the HURON type of milling machine remains in demand, although their substantial size can limit their use in smaller workshops.

In the modern era, HURON competes with other CNC machine tool builders, offering advanced 5-axis CNC machining centers in line with the evolving technology and industry needs.
